middle school days

Blurryface is a mix bag of an album. You have great songs like Heavydirtysoul (HDS) and Message Man yet mediocre songs like Lane Boy and Not Today. The album has a similar problem to their later album Clancy: cohesion. Many of the songs don’t go to together well. Not Today, The Judge, WDBWOTV all feel like the same album but songs like HDS, Goner, Message Man do not. That doesn’t mean each of those songs are bad alone, but together they just don’t mesh well. The other main problem with this record is production. Many of the tracks are not produced that well.

There are some highlights however: Message Man is a great track, Goner is a great closer, and HDS is a great single, Ride and Stressed Out are great singles, Fairly Local has great instrumentation, Hometown is beautiful. This album is incredibly difficult to rate, there’s just so much greatness yet so much... corniness? It’s not an album I revisit much because of the mostly poor production and sometimes outright cringe lyrics (all of Lane Boy, mostly)
